Infinite Open World Adventure/Racing (Optimized for Mobile VR)

Hover Quest is my very first game, currently in development and made specifically for the Oculus Quest. It involves a high-speed futuristic hover car which can be driven across infinite, procedurally generated terrain, with points of interest scattered across a large area. It has been a series of intense challenges and fun learning experiences.

Low poly terrain, roughly 2 miles across, generating in realtime.

The player can disembark the car and walk around with various locomotion systems including teleportation, smooth movement, even climbing and jetpacking. There is an optional first person shooter element which can be played to gather extra resources. Throughout their journey, they will scale massive structures, meet wild alien creatures, travel through portals, race on bending tracks with epic jumps, and have a psychedelic experience while unraveling a mysterious plot surrounding the planet on which the game takes place.

Since my strengths are not in visual art, I’m simply blocking out my ideas in Blender with stylized low poly models and using old school shading techniques. While I plan on eventually hiring an artist, I do appreciate the nostalgia factor of feeling like I am in a Nintendo 64 game.

I implemented a pixel dither effect in custom shaders to achieve a retro-stylized “distance fog.”

The world is largely inspired by colorful, psychedelic Heavy Metal comics from artists Moebius and Philippe Druillet in the 70s.

As it is being designed for the Oculus Quest, working within its tight constraints is the highest priority. Much of the development time on Hover Quest has been spent learning best practices for mobile development and useful tricks to overcome difficult challenges, such as creating a truly infinite world that runs at a smooth framerate on a mobile chip, even while driving a virtual hover car at 500+ miles per hour.
