After learning basic VR networking from another project, and realizing the cost of running large multiplayer servers, I began making simple multi-user spaces to hang out exclusively with friends and demo to clients. I find it interesting and fun to ask, “If you could have any kind of place to meet with people in, what would it be?” Some people want a spaceship, some want a submarine, some want a beach… once you establish an environment, it can be fun to imagine and expand upon what kind of interaction might take place as well. Whether it’s studying the stars or appreciating artwork, I’ve helped users carve out their own personal space in their own personal app, with a customized interactive world built from original and third-party assets.
I’ve developed these multi-user worlds using both Photon and Normcore networking services to facilitate basic movement and interactions with Virtual Reality Toolkit.
